Default Episode S35E05: Taylor Swift / Taylor Swift (Aired 2009-11-07)

Cold Open: "End of an Era" Coverage
For Fox News, Tuesday night was a night of joy, as to them, not only did Barack Obama lose 2 of the 3 bi-elections but he also lost the presidency. To mark this momentous failure for Barack, Fox News has gathered a slew of panellists who have come to salivate in the loss in their special report entitled "End of an Era". These panellists include Fox News personality Greta Van Suster (Kristen Wiig), former deputy of the chief of staff from the George W Bush administration Karl Rove (Bobby Moynihan), and their small pocket of Republican enthusiasm Glenn Beck (Jason Sudeikis). Sheppard Smith (Bill Hader) goes over the heartbreaking loss for the Democrats (but mostly Barack) of two states that were once Democratic, as Virginia and New Jersey help seal the fate of Barack. All the panellists, except for the lone Democratic panellist Joe Trippi (Fred Armisen) agree that Barack is toast. When it comes to the New York 27th congressional district, Sheppard does not feel the need to give the results, as according to him "It's just not that important".

Monologue: Taylor Swift
Taylor Swift has reached her childhood dream she has had since her youthful teen years of 2005. She is hosting SNL. She is extremely nervous, so to calm her nerves, she writes a song about the very monologue she is doing. She sings about what she is not going to sing about on her monologue, like about the people she puts in her songs to ruin their social lives, and "that guy Joe" meaning Joe Jonas, the guy who broke up with her on the phone, and then pads it by just saying la la la, as typical to a lot of her songs. She also says that she will not be talking about Kanye who ruined her Music Television Video Music Award monologue as the situation has been resolved because now she has security on location.

Credits: Taylor Swift (Herself), Jason Sudeikis (Security Personnel #1), Bill Hader (Security Personnel #2)

Fake Commercial: Carter N' Sons
Ronnie Carter owns his own restaurant with signature pork products so good, it'll give off swine fever! A spokesperson for Carter N' Sons makes it a point to note that the only commercial they could get on the air was one from 2002, before anyone heard of swine flu, as business has been bad due to the mix up between swine fever and swine flu. Also pointed out is the fact that swine fever is different from swine flu and have no connection in any harmful way.

Credits: Bobby Moynihan (Ronnie Carter), Nasim Pedrad (Mom), Fred Armisen (Father), Andy Samberg (Cowboy), Jason Sudeikis (Elvis Presley Impersonator)

The View: Kate Gosselin / Nicolas Cage
It's "The View" with fill in panellist Sherri Sheppard, Kate Gosselin (Taylor Swift), who is on a press tour with the only reason being that she can go on a press tour. Barbara Walters (Nasim Pedrad) then brings up one of the biggest issue of the day, the swine flu outbreak, to which Whoopi Goldberg (Kenan Thompson) just starts spewing random numbers and letters and makes an argument that's got nothing to do with the flu. Barbara then brings out the days guest Nicolas Cage (Andy Samberg) where he discusses how he is broke now due to bad decisions by his agent, and that now he is going to have to find some way to make money, like steal the Declaration of Independence and hope that there is a map on the back, much like the plot of his movie "National Treasure". Throughout the episode, everyone can't stop mentioning how great Kate's hair is, and how she managed to get it that way.

Credits: Kenan Thompson (Whoopi Goldberg), Fred Armisen (Joy Behar), Taylor Swift (Kate Gosselin), Kristen Wiig (Elisabeth Hasselbeck), Nasim Pedrad (Barbara Walters), Andy Samberg (Nicolas Cage)

SNL Digital Short: Firelight
Stella (Taylor Swift) is an ordinary girl in a small Washington town, when she becomes attracted to a member of a family of green skin, bolt necked throat choking group of individuals called the Franks. His name is Phillip Frank (Bill Hader). She soon realizes that with his green skin, bolted neck, and his fear of fire, that he is a Frankenstein. She doesn't mind, and is actually falling in love with Phillip, but he cannot kiss her, because he has a nasty habit of choking people to death. After a wave of choke related deaths, Stella starts to think that Phillip is involved. This sets off a chain of events that will change the life of Stella in the "fire" of "light".

Credits: Nasim Pedrad (Anna Kendrick: Jessica Stanley), Jenny Slate (Christian Serratos: Angela Weber), Taylor Swift (Stella Swan), Andy Samberg (Robert Pattison: Edward Cullen, Lomax), Abby Elliott (Female Frank), Bill Hader (Phillip Frank), Bobby Moynihan (Male Frank #1), Fred Armisen (José Zúñiga: Molina), Will Forte (Billy Burke: Charlie Swan), Jason Sudeikis (Male Frank #2), Kenan Thompson (Male Frank #3)

Hollywood Dish
Taylor Swift is being interviewed for the entertainment news show "Hollywood Dish", but as she is being interviewed, show runners Anna Stasiasticks (Kristen Wiig) and Brady Trunk (Bill Hader), are making odd funny faces at her. They say it's so that they don't block the audio with "mh hmms" and such, but they are coming off as annoying, distracting, and weird. When they ask her about what her chances are of winning one of her 5 "American Country Music Award" nominations, she says she think she "could win", as Anna and Brady mouth no to her in disgusting fashion. When Brady mentions to her to make sure Kanye doesn't end up on stage, she laughs, but she is then counselled by Anna and Brady to laugh louder to the point where she sounds like a crazy person. When they ask her if she has an opinion on Ellen DeGeneres joining "American Idol" and she says she doesn't, Brady spits whatever he was drinking from his mug right in Anna's face, smudging her makeup, and befuddling Taylor. After she sees them eating ice cream together, and sees Brady wearing fake eye glasses, she leaves in anger. In the end, it turns out that all of Anna and Brady's antics were a ploy to get Taylor to look crazy, so they could post her interview with the subtitle "has the pressure finally gotten to her".

Credits: Taylor Swift (Herself), Kristen Wiig (Anna Stasiasticks), Bill Hader (Brady Trunk)

T.R.A.A.A.P.D.
Samantha Samuels (Taylor Swift) a braced faced teen has found that some of the worst drivers on the roads are parents. That’s why she has founded the Teens Raising Awareness About Awful Parent Drivers, or T.R.A.A.A.P.D. They will teach parents the problems they have driving on the road like driving while lecturing, driving while trying to balance hot coffee, driving while giving the "birds and the bees" talk, driving while revealing family secrets, and driving while singing along to a song you don't know the lyrics to. It turns out that this is just Samantha's passive aggressive way of getting her parents to give her the car.

Credits: Taylor Swift (Samantha Samuels), Abby Elliott (Texter), Jason Sudeikis (Samantha's Dad), Kristen Wiig (Samantha's Mom)

Weekend Update: November 7th, 2009
Tonight’s top stories include New York's willingness to now buy things like re-elections and World Series championships, first advertisers bailed on Glenn Beck, and now his appendices seem to want to do the same, as he is on leave with a appendicitis, and an iphone application is launched that is able to tell what a baby wants from its cries, like how it wants you to put down the iphone and help it. Also, Nicholas Fehn (Fred Armisen) gives his "spin" if you can even call it that on the weeks news, Sarah McLachlan (Abby Elliott) talks about the return of her "Lilith Fair" only woman folk music show, but switches to the dogs from her creepy SPCA commercial ads, and Amy Poehler returns to the update desk to talk about the outrageous way employees got the H1N1 anti-virus in another edition of "Really!?! with Seth and Amy".

Credits: Seth Meyers (Himself), Fred Armisen (Nicholas Fehn), Abby Elliott (Sarah McLachlan), Amy Poehler (Herself)

Penelope: Nicole's Wedding
It's a wedding, and that means another event for Penelope (Kristen Wiig) to let out her unique brand of incessant one upping. When someone claims they are glad they brought tissues, she says that she brought tissues, toilet paper, and a Sham wow. When the couple Steve Parker (Bill Hader), and Nicole Parker (Abby Elliott) come into the reception hall, Penelope tries to steal their thunder by posing with them. She then starts talking about her honeymoon on the honey moon and angers one of Steve and Nicole's close friends, June (Taylor Swift). When Penelope mentions that this is her day that she bought from the government, June goes into a frenzy and starts talking about how she can take her feet off, how she can watch "Toy Story" when she's sleeping, and how her mom is a rollercoaster among other things, but you can't put Penelope in a corner, as she comes back with the fact that her feet take her off and then go to sleep, she can watch free on demand movies when she closes her eyes, and that her moms and dad is "Six Flags", and "Bush Gardens" respectively.

Credits: Taylor Swift (June), Andy Samberg (Friend), Kristen Wiig (Penelope), Will Forte (D.J), Bill Hader (Steve Parker), Abby Elliott (Nicole Parker)

Scared Straight: Joyriding
Well the Scared Straight program is at it again, as a couple of deliquesces once again under officer Sikorsky (Jason Sudeikis) have to be scared straight by Lorenzo McIntosh (Kenan Thompson) and his white sidekick Skeet Devlin (Taylor Swift). The kids were out joyriding and they don't see why it's considered such a big deal, and Lorenzo sets there mind straight on the fact that in prison, things will happen to them that they won't like, but all of these facts seem to be the plot of Hollywood movies like "Top Gun", "The Sound of Music", and "Back to the Future". When one of the kids contradicts him on the fact that he's mentioning Hollywood movies, he tells them the horrors of prison like how in prison, inmates cockpits won't be ejecting out they will be ejecting in, sewing needles shoved up their butts, and that in prison your flux capacity will reach over 1.21 jizzawatts. That is when Sikorsky draws the line, and tells them to leave. as they leave, one of the boys (Bobby Moynihan) notices that they are helping an old lady, but Sikorsky soon realizes that there killing her.

Credits: Jason Sudeikis (Sikorsky), Bill Hader (Kid #1), Andy Samberg (Kid #2), Bobby Moynihan (Kid #3), Kenan Thompson (Lorenzo McIntosh), Taylor Swift (Skeet Devlin)

Clingy Roommates
Lexi (Nasim Pedrad), and Bennett (Andy Samberg) are in a very close relationship, but what Bennett does not know is that Lexi also has a very close relationship with her roommate Anna (Taylor Swift), a little too close. They can't seem to bare being away from each other for more than 2 hours. Even when Anna goes to change into her pyjamas she calls Lexi in the other room to tell her how it's going. When she comes out, they cuddle under a blanket, completely ignoring Bennett and start singing a really childish inside song. When Bennett expresses his displeasure with the attachment they seem to have on each other, Anna understands and leave, with Lexi hooked to her leg. However, as soon as Bennett starts to have any kind of regret for splitting their relationship, Lexi calls Anna back in, and Bennett realizes that this is just something he's probably going to have to deal with.

Credits: Nasim Pedrad (Lexi), Andy Samberg (Bennett), Taylor Swift (Anna)

Bunny Business Soundtrack
From the kids movie "Bunny Business" about bunnies in an office with a lot of ambition, comes "Bunny Business Soundtrack" with songs from Randy Newman (Fred Armisen), Natalie Merchant (Kristen Wiig), Shakira Ripoll (Taylor Swift), Adam Duritz (Andy Samberg), Eddie Vedder (Bill Hader), Christina Aguilera (Abby Elliott), and Jennifer Hudson (Kenan Thompson). Here's the funny thing, the movie was never even finished. They just made it up because the idea was so cute and absurd that they knew it would be a funny album.

Credits: Fred Armisen (Randy Newman), Kristen Wiig (Natalie Merchant), Taylor Swift (Shakira Ripoll), Andy Samberg (Adam Duritz), Bill Hader (Eddie Vedder), Abby Elliott (Christina Auguilera), Kenan Thompson (Jennifer Hudson)

Over the next little while, I'm just going to have to find some way to incoperate the phrase Swiftboat captain into this episode. I think I'll try to use it anytime I can.

Taylor Swift: The Michael Phelps of musicians. I've seen better acting from Eliza Dushku. My sphincter had better timing when I contracted explosive diarrhea. My cat carries a more pleasant tune when I step on his sac. Etcetera.

I didn't *hate* tonight's episode or anything, but everything was about as average as average can be, and that's *before* Taylor stunk it all up. Actors and actresses ONLY from here on out, please and thanks.

Vote, rate, and review or die. Your choice.

God Vgate has completely lowered the usual discussion on here.

Ah I love it when I haven't seen the episode and I can just hear the creative badmouthing of it. Sometimes it's the funniest part of the night! Also, maybe I'll vote, maybe I'll rate maybe I'll review, so maybe I'll die. Depends.

Well, I thought it was surprisingly funny. Hard to pick my favorite. Possibly more later.

Post bw's Review of S35E05

Cold Open: "End of an Era" Coverage: Well deserved, but it's tough to get excited about the sketch comedy equivalent of shooting fish in a barrel. Kristen's shifting from left to right, Sudsy's Glenn Beck, and Bill's impression of... whoever he was impersonating were all good for a few laughs, but would I have gotten any fewer laughs had I flipped over to the real FOX News for five minutes? Doubtful.

Monologue: Taylor Swift: "Staying up past my bedtime to watch Bill Hader and Andy Samberg..." Works for me. Base score of three stars for the way she pronounced "monologue" alone, plus 0.5 for, in theory, writing the song herself.

Fake Commercial: Carter N' Sons: Cute enough, I guess. Better than most of the fake commercials we've seen this season. Mind you, most of the *real* commercials we've seen this season have been better than the fake commercials we've seen this season.

The View: Kate Gosselin / Nicolas Cage: Timing, Taylor -- timing. Not the best "View" they've ever done, but you know what? Joy? As always, awesome. Whoopi? As always, awesome. Elisabeth? As always, awesome. That's good enough for me. Arabic Barbara Walters, I'll admit, was a bit of a trip, but otherwise, Nasim adequately picked up where Michaela left off. Here's hoping we see more of that next week in the form of Hoda Kotb. In the meantime, please accept this four. Four. Fo. Ur. This.

SNL Digital Short: Firelight: Oh, I get it -- because vampires are monsters and so is Frankenstein. Good one. Great production here, but how's about something funny next time, Andy? You remember humor, don't you?

Hollywood Dish: Oh, I get it -- because something vaguely similar happened to Taylor once, she thought it'd be WICKED funny as a sketch, and the writers had to approve at least one of her dumbass ideas. I'll bet all eleven celebrities who were watching tonight were ROLLING! As for the rest of us, thank goodness Kristen and Bill are Kristen and Bill, or this would've been a complete and total waste of time. Forced laughter? Somewhat amusing. Spit-take? Can't go wrong with those. Everything else? Meh.

T.R.A.A.A.P.D.: Jumpin' Jesus, it's ABBY! And... there she goes. Anyway, not bad, I guess. I have nothing further to say here.

Weekend Update: November 7th, 2009: Base score of 4.5, minus 0.5 for the below average jokes, minus 0.5 for the worst Nicholas Fehn yet (and I'm a big fan), and plus 0.5 for -- you guessed it -- ABBY! I can't comment as to the accuracy of the impression, but as usual, hilarious to the max. Rock it, girl!

Penelope: Nicole's Wedding: I can't believe I'm about to say this, but... I think it might be time to retire Penelope. It's all been done at this point. Still funny, still one of the better sketches of the night, but for me, it just doesn't have the impact it once did. Too bad.

Scared Straight: Joyriding: Timing, Taylor -- timing. I don't mind these, but they're only as funny as their weakest link, and, uh... well, you see where I'm going with this. Base score of something or other, minus a significant amount for one of the worst performances in SNL history. For shame, Swiftster.

Clingy Roommates: Glad to see a one-off every so often, but... Taylor. Ugh. If I ever see you in person, hon, I just might kill you. You've been warned.

Bunny Business Soundtrack: For the second time tonight, Abby outsings the musical guest. Ouch. Anyway, this was three minutes of song parodies about bunnies. Filler of the most obvious kind, sure, but it worked well enough for me. Even Taylor had me laughing here, which, after the preceding 85 minutes, was the absolute *last* thing I was expecting. Law of averages, I guess.

Overall: As usual, pretty much what I expected. It'd be nice if, for once, someone exceeded my expectations, but I won't hold my breath on that one. Long story short, Taylor Swift rots in every possible way a person could conceivably rot. Terrible episode, terrible host, terrible musician. For the good of mankind, please, never open your mouth again, hon. Our various senses appreciate your compliance.

Cold Open: "End of an Era" Coverage: These political cold opens are getting kinda tiresome. But at least it wasn't Obama. so B

Monologue: Taylor Swift: As far as monologues go, this was actually pretty good B

Carter N' Sons: The idea was funny, the execution of that idea.. wasn't. I dunno about this one, it got repetitive. D

The View: Kate Gosselin / Nicolas Cage: Whoopi, Joy and Elisabeth were all awesome as usual. The new Barabara Walters was weird. It didn't sound like her at all imo. Taylor's Kate was terrible. And Nicolas Cage was random and unnecessary. B

SNL Digital Short: Firelight: This didn't make me laugh at all D

Hollywood Dish: This was actaully pretty funny. Bill and Kristen made this sketch. And Taylor's laugh was the best part. However everything else Taylor did was meh B

T.R.A.A.A.P.D.: This was ok C

Weekend Update: November 7th, 2009: The jokes were pretty good. Amy returning to do Really was unexpected and it was the best part of WU this week. Nicholas Fehn was terrible. I liked Fehn the first time I saw him but by his second apparence, it stopped being funny becuase it's the exact same. B

Penelope: Nicole's Wedding: I love Penelope but this was the worst one they did. It went by too quickly. I think it was Taylor's reactions that ruined the sketch. C

Scared Straight: Joyriding: I hate these sketches so much F

Clingy Roommates: Best sketch of the night. Taylor finally made a sketch funny. A

Bunny Business Soundtrack: This was pretty good too. A

This was episode was pretty average. About the same quality as the first four this season. I'll give it a B- Funny that the two best skecthes were at the end of the episode. Taylor's acting wasn't that great, she should definitely stick to singing. But at least she's better than Kanye in both those areas. Booya!

Possibly. I recall hating the LeBron one as well. Such a waste.

I'm not sure I'd go quite that far.

Well at least Taylor doesn't need auto-tune to make her singing voice bareable.

Cold Open: "End of an Era" Coverage
-There honestly isn't a part of this sketch that didn't make me laugh.

Monologue: Taylor Swift
-Weird choice in monologue. I still enjoyed it.
-The lala, haha part was the best part

Fake Commercial: Carter N' Sons
-Pretty solid. Andy made me laugh a lot in this sketch.
-The little messages between takes scrolled much too slowly though. Brings a 3.5 star concept to just 3 stars.

The View: Kate Gosselin / Nicolas Cage
-All of the impressions of the ladies were pretty spot-on other than Nasim's Barbara. It was a little off.
-Kate Gosselin had some funny lines, but Taylor's impression could have been better.
-Andy had Nicolas Cage's voice deadon. Doesn't look like him, but hell, it's still a great impression.
-The ending was really abrupt, though. They didn't even play the ending music over the title card. Does this always happen?

SNL Digital Short: Firelight
-Everybody's performances were good in this, especially Taylor and Bill, but unfortunately the concept went friggin' nowhere.
-This really disappointed me, and even though it deserves about 2 stars, I'm shaving off another star because you wasted Bill AND botched a Twilight parody at the same time.

Hollywood Dish
-Kristen and Bill make an interesting duo. They were the best part of this sketch.
-Basically Taylor played the straight role in here, and she did a pretty good job. Her forced laughter was a highlight.
-The ending was hilarious.

T.R.A.A.A.P.D.
-Went nowhere, really.
-It was still pretty funny, and Kristen got a few bellylaughs out of me with her rendition of "LoveGame".

Weekend Update: November 7th, 2009
-I like Nicholas Fehn. He seems a lot like MADtv's Luann Lockhart. At least the whole concept of a horrible standup comedian is a similarity.
-Abby's Sarah McLachlan didn't exactly have me rolling, but she did a good job and all of the descriptions of the terrible things that happened to dogs were quite funny. More of her, please. Speaking of which, where has Jenny gone...
-Hi, Amy.

Penelope: Nicole's Wedding
-This was better than the one they did in the Neil Patrick Harris episode. At least this time, it wasn't long enough to really frustrate me.
-Kristen's line about getting on-demand movies on her eyelids was priceless.
-Nice night for the production team tonight.
-Bill and Abby make a cute couple

Scared Straight: Joyriding
-Pretty dumb. If "overlong" was in the dictionary, a picture of this sketch would be there.
-Taylor did practically nothing in this sketch except agreeing with everything Kenan said. Worst performance of the night.
-The only part that really got a rise out of me was Jason's weird hop onto the table.

Clingy Roommates
-I liked this. It's always nice to see some one-offs once in a blue moon.
-Andy's facial expressions were great. And for once, I have no complaints about a Nasim performance. She was fantastic in this and I'm assuming she wrote this too. Solid work.
-Taylor confused me in this. I wasn't sure what she was trying to do with the voice she was making, but I guess it got a few laughs out of me.
-Ending dragged a bit, though.

Bunny Business Soundtrack
-No complaints impressionwise. Writing wasn't as good as it could have been, but given it's the last sketch of the night, to hell with it. Nicely done.

Overall:
Enjoyable and consistent episode that exceeded my expctations. Really, most of the sketches were pretty funny, and there were only two I really hated (firelight and Scared Straight.) On another plus note, they used almost everybody that SNL's been pushing on the back burner this week: tons of Bill, Andy, Abby, and Nasim gets her first starring role. Taylor was a little better than I thought she would be, but she's no Timberlake. It looks like they're finally hitting a groove this season, though. I approve.
On an interesting note, it seems this season is extremely consistent in hitting an upwards groove. I mean, the premiere would have scored a 5.5 from me, then going to a 6 with Ryan, 6.5 with Drew, and hitting a 7 with Gerard. This episode continues the pattern by scoring a solid 7.5 from me. I just hope they can keep it up next week.

Oh yeah, and I just found a hilarious MADtv reference. In the Penelope sketch, the names of the bride and groom are announced as "Mr. and Mrs. Nicole and Steve Parker", the former being the name of a well-known castmember on MADtv who later made it to Broadway as Elphaba in Wicked. Intentional or not, that was hilarious.

Okay, I'll try my hand at a review. This is from a 14-year-old's point of view, so you know.

Cold Open:
*I had to ask my dad who all of the people were, but I guess it was still kinda funny, I suppose. B-

Monologue:
*I found this sketch pretty funny.
*I loved the little "Hi Taylor -kiss-" and the "La La La, Ha Ha Ha". B

Commercial:
*Neh, okay. No huge laughs from me, but some chuckles. B

The View:
*I've always loved the View. I wondered how they would do it without whats-her-name(I feel awful for not remembering :x), but it was pretty good nonetheless!
*The guy was a little unnessessary, I think. B

Firelight:
*Love, love, loved it. Of course, I love every Twilight parody, and this was no exception.
*GOD I HATE TWILIGHT I JUST WANT TO KILL IT.
*Now that that's over, B+

Hollywood Dish:
*Okay, whatever. Taylor's forced laugh was pretty funny.
*The end was great. But I didn't love the sketch. C+

T.R.A.A.P.D.:
*Love love loved it.
*Kristen's Lovegame was a highlight, and the way Taylor said "You're driving on the sidewalk." was just hilarious to me.
*I also loved the "MOOOOOOOM!"s. A

Weekend Update:
*Nicholas Fehn? Neh.
*Sarah McLachlan? Yes, god yes. I HATE THOSE COMMERCIALS although everyone does, and Seth's expressions were priceless.
*Yay, Amy and REALLY?!
*THE DOGS, SETH. A-

Penelope:
*I love Penelope, but this one wasn't as funny as the last one.
*Still okay. B-

Scared Straight:
*Really? This was weak. All Taylor did was agree with Kenan.
*I liked these previously, but when she's not contributing at all... C-

Roommates:
*Ha, funny. I felt sorry for Andy. All he wanted was some alone time and here comes Anna, ruining his good time.
*Girls are like this at school after a week of fall break, it's ridiculous.
*Ummm, B.

Bunny Business:
*Loved it. Very much. A-

Overall:
*That was okay! Wasn't a knock out of the park, but it worked. I mean, it was better than Megan Fox, right? B

Bleh. I have to do that in installments next time.

No worries -- you don't have to be a lifelong fan of the show or an English professor to submit a review. Great first effort!

To be perfectly fair, you're right -- Seth was instrumental in the success of that segment. I wonder why I didn't mention this in my review...

Anyway, glad to see reviews all around this week. Keep 'em comin'! I'm getting more out of these overall ratings than I did the episode itself.

Good to know I'm not the only one. Very nice review. I found myself sort of half-and-half agreeing and disagreeing with it, but it's pretty good.
